With The Election Approaching Obama Targets Veteran Voters
President Obama has wound down Americaโs war in Iraq, ordered the operation thatย killed Osama bin Ladenย and set in motion theย end of U.S. combat operations in Afghanistan. He also has focused particular attention on veterans and military families,ย increasing funds for the Department of Veterans Affairs, implementing theย post-Sept. 11 G.I. Billย andย launching job programsย for returning troops.
As he gears up his reelection effort, Obama is trying to use that record, and especially his emphasis on the home front, to win the political support of veterans and military families in a handful of important swing states.
In a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, Obama is favored over Romney by 42% to 35% by veterans. In 2008, ย Senator John McCain won veterans by 10 points – so Obama appears to be making headway with veterans.
